If you raise or sell meat goats, there’s an opportunity to share your experience and help shape the future of the U.S. meat goat industry. Prairie View A&M University, in partnership with the University of Wisconsin–River Falls, is conducting a national meat goat survey to better understand how we raise, manage, and market goats for meat across the country.
This study is one of the few focused entirely on meat goat production in the United States. It aims to identify the real challenges farmers and ranchers face and help shape recommendations for the meat goat industry’s future growth.
The survey takes about 25 minutes, and all responses are anonymous. When you complete it, you’ll also be entered into a random drawing for one of 65 $30 cash vouchers.
Why this survey is important
The meat goat industry is still young compared to other livestock sectors like beef, pork, and chicken. Because of that, we don’t have nearly as much research, data, or funding dedicated to goats, especially those raised for meat.
This means there are major gaps in research and industry development related to health and veterinary care, management and nutrition practices across production systems, carcass quality, and meat cuts, among other topics.
Additionally, there’s minimal industry focus on building consumer awareness and education around goat meat; USDA or university market price tracking; supply chain trends and production reporting; and the lack of USDA promotion or marketing programs that could help strengthen the industry.
Each of these areas impacts how we manage our herds and market our products. But without enough data, it’s hard for researchers, educators, and policymakers to make informed recommendations or create support programs.
That’s why your participation matters. Whether you raise a few goats or several hundred, your input helps create a clearer picture of the U.S. meat goat industry.
